Notes on religion, philosophy, and politics from Henry Neufeld, creator of this site
I am a fan of science fiction, which is a surprise to many who don't connect that interest with my profession teaching the Bible. But I not only don't see the conflict, I find myself frequently using material from my science fiction reading in teaching and preaching. I believe that literature in all its forms, including mystery and science fiction helps to build the human mind, and can help us think more creatively about our world and how we should live in it.
Some of my favorite authors include the well-known Agatha Christie, the less known but no less interesting Dorothy Sayers, light-hearted Lillian Jackson Braun, along with Elizabeth Peters, Ellis Peters, and many others. Literature need not be only for a limited set of purposes. Sometimes it gives us a few hours of escape, sometimes serious thinking, sometimes humor, sometimes time to gaze at beauty with our mind's eye.
