Books by Luke Timothy Johnson
Luke Timothy Johnson has recently become famous for his book, The Real Jesus. Dr. Johnson's objection to the Jesus Seminar and other historical Jesus research does not appear to be largely an historical complaint, though he certainly does complain about methodology. Rather, he appears to object to the quest as such and to the distinction made between the historical Jesus, seen as authentic, and to the Jesus of faith. Johnson becomes rather polemical at times, but it seems this is a regular hazard when writing about historical Jesus research. My understanding is that Robert Funk's Honest to Jesus has its own share of polemics.
A longer review will be forthcoming as I have the time, but for the moment, I would recommend reading this book as one of three major viewpoints. To understand the controversy, one should read something by a historical Jesus researcher, such as Borg, Crossan, Meier or Brown (not to imply that those four figures agree), a conservative evangelical (Robert Stein, D. A. Carson), and Luke Timothy Johnson.
