Most Christians are ignorant of Bible translations, how they are produced, and what makes the differences between them. It is my firm opinion that they should be privileged to be ignorant on this topic. Unfortunately, there is a controversy in many churches today about which version is the Bible. This varies from an attempt to define a particular version as best, without regard to how it is to be used and by whom, to the simple claim that a particular translation, the King James Version, is the one true word of God. (See my Bible Translations FAQ for more information on this topic.)

To counter these types of claims, and to prevent those who would restrict access to the Bible to an archaic form of language, some knowledge of this topic is needed. James R. White's book fills this gap. James White is no liberal. He is, in fact, an evangelical Christian who believes in the inerrancy of scripture. He operates a Christian ministry, Alpha Omega Ministries, which has as one of its goals a response to various "cults." (See Other Books by James R. White.)

What White does in this book is present the case against the King James Version Only movement systematically and thoroughly, yet in language that any layman can follow. He starts by outlining the problem. He goes on to deal with the major issues which distinguish one Bible translation from another, and then he deals with some major figures in the KJV-Only movement, with a section on Dr. Edward F. Hills, Gail Riplinger, and Dr. Peter Ruckman. Finally, he deals with translational and textual issues in some detail.

It is very likely that if you have a question about a translation in one of the modern versions brought to you by a KJVO advocate that you will be able to find a discussion of the problem in this book.

This is an excellent book for the average Christian layman and should put to rest concerns about using a modern version of the Bible for study, reading or worship.
