These Things are Written:
An introduction to the religious ideas of the Bible
Efird, James M. These Things are Written: An introduction to the religious ideas of the Bible. Atlanta: John Knox Press, 1978. ISBN: 0-8042-0073-4. 169 pages.
Though it's been out for a few years, this book is still a helpful handbook on some Bible basics. Efird examines some Bible study basics, and then major movements and streams in the Biblical text and tradition. He offers a number of excellent suggestions for understanding. Two chapters about the apostle Paul are especially helpful.
This book is written for the serious layperson or the early theology student. It's very clear, without unnecessary technical vocabulary. It will keep you thinking.
Dr. Efird's views are conservative from the general academic perspective, and probably moderate to moderately liberal from an evangelical perspective, but I would still place him in or near the evangelical camp. He is clear on his methodology and the reasons for the approaches he takes to the various portions of scripture.
I recommend this book for the serious layperson and student.
